59Blood Flow to the Rotator Cuff Is Critical for Healing

British Journal of Sports Medicine (2010) · Hegedus EJ, Cook C, Brennan M, Wyland D, Garrison JC, Driesner D

This systematic review compiled 19 studies examining blood flow to the rotator cuff tendons and its relationship to injury and healing. The researchers found that increased blood flow is a normal healing response to smaller tears, but as tears grow larger, the blood supply fails and circulation decreases. They also found that mechanical impingement can reduce blood flow to the tendon. Notably, the study suggests that exercise may increase blood flow to the rotator cuff, supporting the concept that stimulating circulation is important for recovery. These findings have direct implications for rehabilitation, emphasizing that maintaining adequate blood flow is essential for tendon healing.
