This review assessed the effects of NSAIDs on inflammation and healing associated with acute soft tissue injuries, examining evidence from animal models and clinical trials. The author explains that NSAIDs produce their anti-inflammatory effects through three mechanisms: inhibiting prostaglandin production, suppressing white blood cell migration to the injury site, and blocking oxygen free radicals. In animal models, NSAIDs showed short-term benefits after acute injury, including faster reduction of swelling and pain. However, the same studies also revealed long-term adverse effects on tissue structure and function, suggesting that while NSAIDs can accelerate initial recovery, they may compromise the quality of the healed tissue over time. The review found that retardation of inflammatory processes after acute injury may limit the area of secondary tissue damage, which is beneficial, but may also retard the overall healing process. Clinical trials of NSAIDs for acute soft tissue injuries showed conflicting results, and the studies have been criticized for methodological limitations. NSAIDs showed few benefits for delayed-onset muscle soreness specifically. The author concludes that the short-term benefits of NSAIDs in treating acute soft tissue injuries must be weighed against the potential long-term adverse effects on tissue healing, structure, and function.
