This article explores how different levels of activity affect the healing of musculoskeletal tissues, including bone, tendon, ligament, cartilage, and muscle. It presents evidence that prolonged immobilization can be detrimental, weakening normal tissues and delaying healing. At the same time, it cautions that premature or excessive motion and loading during the early phases of repair can halt or inhibit recovery. The author explains that repair tissues—particularly in tendons and ligaments—are often more sensitive to mechanical stress than mature, healthy tissues.
